The development of Palestinian Arab communities in Israel is facing significant challenges. These communities are grappling with overcrowding and a worsening shortage of land. Planning in these areas often lacks a comprehensive long-term vision that adequately addresses the needs of the population. In particular, there is a lack of well-designed, constructed and open public spaces that cater to the residents and align with their current lifestyles.
The study focused on Yaffa (Yafia) and analyzed the various community and social conditions that have existed in the urban space both in the past and present. It unveiled distinct levels of publicity and privacy within the existing fabric of the community. The project presents a planning approach that takes into account the current environment on multiple scales. To exemplify this approach, it intervenes in three different spaces within the existing social structure.
